The Next Great Christmas Star is a hilarious, heartwarming Christmas play, talent-show style, with a twist at the end! It depicts a popular TV show, filming live at your church, searching for someone who captures the true essence of the Christmas meaning, through music, dance, poetry, or any other creative act.
Fun and laughter are woven throughout the play with nine talent acts.
The plot twist happens when, after the audience has seen all the performances “on the list,” the Stage Crew Leader gives a note to Jazz, the TV show host, letting him know of a last-minute additional act. Mary is the last to perform, singing a song that gives the meaning of Christmas.
It’s not just a talent show. This production lets the audience see what happens behind the scenes of a television variety show.
Is this a children’s production?
This production is great to get the whole church involved! It’s a perfect intergenerational event! Five lead actors have the majority of lines in this 23-page script. While older children might be able to read their lines, teens and adults would have a better perspective to act as the characters they could be. Children find most of their parts in the talent acts or the TV stage crew.
Can a small church do this play?
The Next Great Christmas Star works great for small and larger churches. Those with mixed ages and/or adults participating find it easy to use as is and also adaptable for larger productions. The number of talent acts can easily be adjusted to fit your needs.
What if we don’t have someone who can perform a specific talent act?
You can easily change and adapt the talent acts to your actors and performers.
What if we don’t have time to memorize all the lines in the script?
No worries! The judges and MC have the majority of lines, and their scripts can easily be hidden on clipboards, tablets, or in a stack of papers on the table.
How long does this production run?
This production lasts approximately one hour, depending on the length of the talent acts.
How many characters are there?
Five main characters carry this play. Three stagehands are written in the play and have active roles holding “Applause” signs for the audience, and setting up props on stage for the talent acts. Nine talent acts are written in the play. It is possible for one person to perform in more than one talent act.
What is needed for stage design?
The main set has a single table with four chairs for the judges. It also needs a podium or music stand with a microphone for Jazz, the TV host. A Scoreboard is positioned either on or off-stage. Small props are needed for the talent acts.
Costumes are SIMPLE & EASY, NO-FUSS! The talent acts handle their own costumes. The Judges and MC dress as they think their persona would dress. TV Stage Hands can wear jeans and plain colored T-shirts.
